How it began
Last summer my husband Eric and I, along with his parents, began the remodel of the old franch house. We call it the franch house because Eric's mom says the property is a farm/ranch. Eric's great Uncle John lived in the house until the great age of 91. He built it back in the 40's and reused a lot of the materials from the old homestead. Uncle John passed away at the beginning of 2011 after leaving the house to stay in a nursing home at the end of 2010. We miss him greatly. At the start of the summer of 2011 we started the clean out of the house. There was a lot of neat and interesting items stored inside. Since Uncle John went through the depression, he never threw anything away either. So, we finally did that for him. After the house was emptied we started demo. All the old sheetrock had to come out and you had to clean up as you went along. This took a go while, but we got it all ripped out. The house has old wood floors, but unfortunately termites got to half the house and it had to be taken up. It is a good thing though because there were issues under the house that needed to be addressed. Eric and his dad reinforced beams and added some to make everything level. We were going to go with how the walls were layed out originally, but the house isn't very big. So, they all came out and new walls were put up and the whole house has been redesigned inside. New electrical was put in along with plumbing in the beginning of 2012. Then a sub floor was put down on the side that was ripped up. Then it was time for sheetrock. There are several steps when you put in sheetrock. You have to tape, float, fill in screw holes, sand, and then spray on texture. It took a good while for it all to be completed so we could start painting. We went with shades of grey for the walls and white on the ceiling. The side of the house that still had hardwood floors got sanded and was sealed with polyurethane. We will put down laminate flooring to match, along with black & white vinyl in the kitchen and laundry room on the side we pulled up. All of the cabinets have been built, but still need to be painted and installed. Eric's mom Debbie has been stripping the paint off the old doors down to the wood so they can be reused. Some of the old wood that was taken out will be planed down and used for trim. We are still a few months away from moving in. I have had a lot of fun getting together all of the furnishings and decor. I can't wait to put it all in place.
